MACOMB, IL -- As part of the annual nationwide Recyclemania initiative, members of the Western Illinois University are encouraged to take the "sustainability pledge."

Western's sustainability pledge tree, which is located in the University Union Brattain Lounge, is in the University Union concourse today (Feb. 14) so members of the University community can make the pledge to sustainability. At tonight's Leatherneck Men's Basketball game in Western Hall, information will be available about Recyclemania and volunteers will be collecting recyclables.

The goal of Recyclemania is to raise awareness of the importance of recycling. More than 400 colleges and universities participate in the annual event.

On Western's campus, all paper products, corrugated cardboard and paperboard/chipboard, plastics (numbers 1-7, except styrofoam), glass, aluminum and tin can be placed in the blue bins across campus. In addition to the "blue bins" that collect daily recyclables, Western also recycles numerous items, including wood pallets, light bulbs, ink and toner cartridges and construction materials. Batteries are also recycled, and each building representative has a battery recycling bin in his/her office.
