MACOMB, IL – A recent Western Illinois University graduate has been awarded the highest collegiate honor given by the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.

Courtney Powelson, of Macomb, received her bachelor's degree in family and consumer sciences in May. During that same month, she was awarded the Mabel Lee Walton Leadership Award by the sorority's national office. Only one award is given nationally each year.

Walton was the sorority's third national president who was interested in and encouraged the sorority's collegiate and alumnae members. The award in her name is one of the most prestigious the national sorority gives and honors collegiate members who display outstanding leadership. The award was first given in 1945.

"Tri Sigma has helped me develop my character in many ways," said Powelson. "Your actions will always speak louder than your words and I always strive to be the best role model possible. I am a firm believer in leading by example and practicing what you preach. Also, being a woman of character is what you do when no one is looking. I believe to be the best version of yourself and a true woman of character, your authenticity must be shown at all times."

The winner of the award is given the opportunity to serve on the national office's Alumnae Collegiate Advisory Committee.

Powelson is working on her internship this summer with Kleinfeld Bridal in New York City, the shop featured on the TLC television show "Say Yes to the Dress." After her internship is complete, Powelson has accepted a job as a regional consultant for the Sigma Sigma Sigma national headquarters.

"I will never be able to say thank you enough for everything that Tri Sigma has blessed me with," said Powelson. "I am beyond grateful each and every day for this outstanding organization."
