MACOMB, IL – Fulbright Scholar and Associate Professor Fanbin Zeng, of China, will visit Western Illinois University Tuesday, Feb. 13 to talk about the use of social media.

Zeng is an associate professor in the College of Journalism and Communication at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China. Since 2004, he has worked as a teacher and researcher in China, specializing in the research of new media and political communication.

While at WIU, Zeng will deliver two lectures: "Social Media Use and Citizen Participation in the United States" at 1 p.m. at Spoon River College, room 106 at 208 S. Johnson St. and "The Relationship Between Social Media Use and Citizen Participation in the United States" at 5 p.m. in the University Union Sandburg Theatre. The lectures will cover how open source tools and social networking platforms create new opportunities for youth to form networks and take action to address many issues directly despite declining news consumption and political knowledge levels among younger demographics.

Zeng has been awarded several research grants on the relationship between Internet use and political participation in China and he has published two books and many academic articles on the topic.

Zeng's WIU visit is conducted through the Fulbright Scholar Program's Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF), which enables visiting scholars to share their research interests, speak about their home country and exchange ideas with students, faculty and community organizations in the United States.

For more information about the lecture, contact WIU Art Professor Keith Holz at DK-Holz@wiu.edu by Feb. 6.
