Professional Development Conference Scheduled for April 13 at WIU

MACOMB, IL -- In February, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H. Res.443, a bipartisan resolution recognizing the importance and effectiveness of trauma-informed care. This will be the topic of a daylong conference, hosted by the McDonough County InterAgency Council, "Trauma Informed Care," Friday, April 13 at Western Illinois University.

The professional development conference, sponsored by the WIU College of Education and Human Services, the WIU Department of Health Sciences and Social Work, the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs (IIRA) at Western, the McDonough County InterAgency Council, the Regional Office of Education No. 26 and the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, will be held from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. in Horrabin Hall.

The event schedule includes:

• 11 a.m.-1 p.m. - Tabletop displays and information will be available from local social services agencies in the Horrabin Hall gymnasium

• 1-1:45 p.m. - Jeanne Koehler, SIU School of Medicine, will discuss cognitive development and the impact of trauma in Horrabin Hall, room 78

• 1:45-2:30 p.m. - Jill Reedy, Macon/Piatt Regional Office of Education, will discuss transforming schools and communities to be trauma informed in Horrabin Hall, room 78

• 2:30-3:15 p.m. - Debbie Reed, president/CEO of Chaddock, will present on what helps children struggling with trauma in Horrabin Hall, room 78

• 3:15-4 p.m. – A panel discussion will discuss best practices using a combined disciplines approach, through police, schools, hospitals and counseling in Horrabin Hall, room 78

• 4-5 p.m. Concurrent breakout sessions

- "Practice makes ______. Are you Curious Now?" presented by West Prairie School District Superintendent Carol Kilver

- "What is the Connection Between Emotion Regulation, Trauma and Suicide?" presented by WIU Assistant Professor of Psychology Kristy Keefe

- "Understanding the Response to Trauma and How to Work with Survivors with Mindfulness and Compassion," presented by JoAnn Bloomberg and Terri Schaffer of the WIU Counseling Center

The event is open free to the public. Professional Development Clock Hours will be offered through ROE 26 and 33. Up to six hours of continuing education credits for QIDP, LCPC, LCSW, LSW, LPC will be offered to registrants.
