MACOMB, IL – A celebration of life for former Western Illinois University employee and WIU student Valencia Pettigrew will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 at Lighthouse Gospel Chapel in Milwaukee, WI, with full military graveside honors service to follow. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at the chapel. Pettigrew, 53, passed away Dec. 31 in Las Vegas, NV.

A WIU alumna, Pettigrew served as an office support associate at WIU from 2011-2013. She also served as the internship coordinator graduate assistant for the WIU Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration Department in 2015. She recently had resigned as the Christian Education Director at Wesley United Methodist Church in Macomb to pursue a degree in dietetics at WIU. Her spouse, Chaplain/Rev. Ronald Pettigrew, is the director of the WIU Veterans Resource Center.

Pettigrew was also a member of the United States Navy, active duty and reserve, from 1984-2008, where she served as an Information Systems Technician, a career counselor and a new members orientation coordinator. During her time in Macomb, she was a Macomb Park District Board Commissioner, serving as the vice president from 2015-2019, and was a board member of the University Park Townhome Owners Association from 2015-2019.

She received her bachelor's degree from Alverno College, and her master's degree from WIU.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald; son and daughter-in-law, Joshua Lamar and Jessica Cortez-Jefferson; daughters, Tiairra Sarah Pettigrew and Asia Mariah Pettigrew; and her parents, Anna Mae (Boone) Parker and Frank Edward Parker.
