MACOMB, IL – Showcasing a day in the life and the best of the best of Western Illinois University is at the forefront of WIU Visual Production Center photographers every time they step out the door of Tillman Hall 207. From athletics to academics to student activities and more, Sarah Ritter, George Hartmann and Rachael Keating are always looking through their lenses for new ways to represent WIU through their photographs.

Ritter, VPC manager, and Keating, VPC digital imaging specialist, were recently recognized by the University Photographers' Association of America (UPAA) in the organization's monthly image competition.

In January 2020, Keating placed fourth in the Sports Features and Illustrations category for her image of WIU Leatherneck Football recruit Dylan Bunkel (bit.ly/WIUVPCUPAA1).

And last month, Ritter took second and third place honors in the Sports Features and Illustrations category for her images of WIU student Brock Daley, president of WIU's Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Club. (bit.ly/WIUVPCUPAA2)

"When we get a photo assignment, George, Rachael and I immediately begin thinking of new and creative ways to showcase our incredible students, faculty and staff, and this wonderful University," Ritter said. "It is a privilege to do what we do, every day – and many nights and weekends – to show off this great place and its people through our images. And to be recognized by our peers at UPAA is just an added bonus to doing what we love."

UPAA's Monthly Image Competition began 2004 as a way for members to share photographs in friendly competition. University of Houston photographer Jeff Shaw came up with the idea and the competition has grown from a few images in its early days to over 300 monthly entries.
