President's Statement on World Events

Dear Campus community,

With President Bush’s announcement yesterday evening, it is clear that war is imminent. I know that there will be differing opinions regarding our engagement in Iraq. However, I hope that we will all remember that our university is a place of ideas and that we need to make certain that there is respect for all viewpoints. We should engage in respectful debate and dialogue; such freedom of expression is a guiding principle of our nation.

I also know that whatever our opinion, our thoughts and best wishes are with those serving in the armed forces (some of whom are our Western colleagues). And we hope that we will all soon live in a world at peace.
