Director of Distance Education and Support Additional Interviews Set

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Three additional candidates will interview for the director of Distance Education and Support at Western Illinois University. Julia Sanders, associate director of the Office of Collaborative Academic Programs at IU Online, Indiana University, interviewed Feb. 11; David Bentz, teaching and learning center coordinator at Eastern Oregon University, interviewed Feb. 17; and Xiaolin Charlene Hu, senior director of student and academic programs at California State University, interviewed Feb. 18.

Brett Coup, former associate vice president for online learning and academic technology at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN, will interview Monday, March 8. An open session will be held from 12:15-1 p.m. Jonathan Paver, dean of liberal arts and learning support at GateWay Community College in Tempe, AZ, will interview Monday, March 15. An open session will be held from 1:15-2 p.m. Raymond Lawson, dean of online learning at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines and Skokie (IL), will interview Wednesday, March 17. An open session will be held from 12:15-1 p.m. Faculty, staff and students who wish to participate in the open sessions must register at https://form.jotform.com/210353570598156.

Coup served as the associate vice president for online learning and academic technology at the University of St. Thomas from 2016-2019. Previously, he was the associate dean of learning technologies at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL from 2013-2016. Coup has also served as the director of distance and virtual learning at Parkland College in Champaign (2004-2013); as faculty for online learning (2001-2003) and a programmer/analyst and webmaster (1998-2000) at Heartland Community College in Normal; and has worked in various positions in private business and industry.

Coup received his master's from Northern Illinois University and his bachelor's degree from Illinois State University.

Paver has served as dean of liberal arts and learning support at GateWay Community College in Tempe, AZ since 2020. Previously, he served as an instructional designer for the Maricopa Center for Learning and Innovation in Tempe from 2019-2020. He has also served as the assistant vice president of transfer and academic support at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove (IL) (2016-2019); dean of academic support and learning technologies at Skyline College, San Bruno, CA (2014-2016); dean of instruction at Linn-Beont Community College, Albany, OR (2012-2014); dean of arts and sciences (2007-2012), executive director of professional development (2008-2010) and curriculum/instructional designer (2007-2008) at Triton College, River Grove (IL), and has worked at other institutions throughout the U.S. in various capacities.

Paver earned his Ed.D. from Northern Illinois University, his master's degree from Trinity International University and his bachelor's degree from WIU.

Lawson has served as dean of online learning at Oakton Community College since 2017. Previously, he was the director of online learning and educational technology at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake (IL) from 2011-2017. Lawson has also served as the program director for information technology and skilled trades (2009-2010) and as program director for skilled trades (2007-2009) for Kaplan Higher Ed Corp, Chicago; as a curriculum specialist for Career Education Corp., Hoffman Estates (IL) (2002-2007); as an internet application developer for Business Logic Corp., Chicago (2000-2001) and an instructional designer/programmer at NIU (1999-2000).

Lawson earned his Ed.D. and a master's from Northern Illinois University, a master's degree from Eastern College (not Eastern University), a bachelor's degree from Universite du Benin (now Universite de Lomé) in West Africa and a bachelor's degree from Universite Marien N'Goubi in the Republic of Congo. He also earned two certificates from the University of Illinois Springfield.

The director of Distance Education and Support (ODES) will coordinate distance education activities and provide strategies for alternative format delivery, instruction, training and support. The director will also provide resources for faculty to develop alternative format delivery courses and provide instructional design to develop new courses and revise existing courses and programs.
