MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Housing and Dining Services (UHDS) Business Manager Patty Thornton has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for June.

Thornton began working at WIU in 1998 as a clerk in UHDS. She was promoted to administrative clerk/office manager at UHDS in 2004, and to her current position in 2021.

According to her nominator, Thornton is an "outstanding employee and colleague, who is always willing to accept new and exciting challenges." The nominator included that the University has changed in a multitude of ways over Thornton's time at WIU; during which she has absorbed a variety of responsibilities that were not part of her original job description.

"She has always been there for me and is someone I can trust and count on for anything," said her nominator. "(Patricia) is also very detailed and well organized, as she keeps thorough documentation for everything with the departments she assists. She cares about people and her community, and is involved within the Rushville community as a member of her church, and has served as an instructor for the bell-choir. She is a shining example of what a Leatherneck should be."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact the Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) at csec-nominations-g@wiu.edu.
