MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University Assistant Director of Retention Initiatives Kelly Severs has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for October.

Severs began working at WIU in 2014 as a clerk in the Center for the Application of Information Technology (CAIT). She was promoted to director of Development in 2021, and assistant director of Retention Initiatives in 2022.

According to her nominator, Severs has gone above and beyond to continue to serve students in new, innovative ways.

"Although Sever's role was adjusted after about a year, she navigated the dynamics of the position extremely well and is a role model for future positions designed to support all students.

Severs developed and coordinated a training focused on expanding the welcoming community for undocumented students," her nominator said. "She also worked hard to support the new student experience through assisting with many events and efforts to help transition our incoming first-year class."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition, should contact the Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) at csec-nominations-g@wiu.edu.
