Macomb Educator Receives Excellence in Science Teaching Award

MACOMB, IL - Greg VanVleet, a sixth grade teacher at Edison School in Macomb, has been selected as the recipient of the 2005 Western Illinois University Maurice G. Kellogg Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. VanVleet was recognized during the 19th annual PreK-8 Science Education Update Conference at Western April 15.
VanVleet earned his masters and bachelors degrees at Western where he studied under Kellogg, who is considered a national leader in the field of science education. Kellogg, who taught at Western for more than 35 years, is one of the founders of the Illinois Science Teachers Association (ISTA).
VanVleet has been teaching for 33 years in the Macomb area. He taught at Westerns Youth University for more than 10 years, specializing in such topics as electrical circuits and animal studies. He is a member of the National Science Teachers Association and the ISTA. VanVleet currently represents the ISTA as a key leader in science for the Macomb area, and he is also an IMPACT II grant recipient.
Greg has mentored many of our students through the field experiences in science and elementary and middle school teaching, said John Beaver, curriculum and instruction professor and director of the science education center at Western. We are always confident that students placed in Gregs classroom will learn best practices when it comes to the laboratory science experience.
