MACOMB, IL -- James L. Huesmann, technical and automated services officer at Linda Hall Library in Kansas City, MO, has been named Dean of Libraries at Western Illinois University.

His appointment, effective Sept. 1, was announced by WIU Provost and Academic Vice President Burton O. Witthuhn.

"Huesmann comes to Western with an excellent background in library technology and service delivery," Witthuhn said. "With continued emphasis in on-line library service, cooperation among libraries and exchange of information, his expertise will help Western continue its outstanding level of service to students, faculty, staff and the community."

At Linda Hall Library, a private research library for science and technology, Huesmann led the division team in providing technical and automated service solutions to the institution, its partners and patrons. Prior to that assignment he was the librarian for automated systems from 1992-1994.

He previously worked as assistant professor in serials collection development/automation at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse (March 1989-December 1991) and was assistant librarian for serial/reference at East Central University, Ada, OK, (1986-1989). He has a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (1983), a master's degree in library and information science from the University of Tennessee (1985) and a master's in Latin American history from the University of Oklahoma (1991). Huesmann has served on state committees for library collection and technical services and as a consultant for the selection of automation systems.

Huesmann replaces Tom Peters who left in January to take a position as head of the Center for Library Initiatives (CLI) for the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium of 12 major research universities.
