"The Advantage" in Concert May 6

MACOMB, IL - - “The Advantage,” a comedic a capella octet comprised of students in the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity at Western Illinois University, will present its spring concert, “Assembly Required – Instruments Not Included,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication Recital Hall.

Founded during the 2003-04 school year by a group of friends in WesternÂ’s Kappa Psi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity, The Advantage is committed to professionalism, musicality and quality entertainment, according to co-founder Scott Weber, a graduate student in molecular biology and biochemistry. Weber earned his bachelorÂ’s degree in biology in 2004 at Western. He has been a member WesternÂ’s Jazz Band, Pep Band and a six-year member of the Marching Leathernecks.

“We pride ourselves on putting on high energy performances of quality music,” said Weber, who sings bass.

The Advantage has performed for groups throughout campus as well as across Illinois for private parties, charities and businesses.

The octet includes two additional founding members in junior history major Sean Murphy (Cary Grove, IL), first tenor, and junior music major Adam Beck (Rock Island, IL), bass.

Baritones are senior music majors Dan Tripp (Sandwich, IL) and Ben Tague (Port Byron, IL); second tenors are junior music major Eric Holloway (Orland Park, IL), president of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and sophomore law enforcement and justice administration major John Varga (Batavia, IL); and senior law enforcement and justice administration major Mike Sevcik (Berwyn, IL) is a first tenor.

Admission to the concert is $5 for the public and $3 for students.
