MACOMB, IL – Jessica Staton, a senior Western Illinois University supply chain management major, is a testament to what having a strong will and goals can do for a person.

Staton, a single mother who is a graduate of Southeastern High School in Augusta (IL), was recently awarded the May Schoon Memorial Scholarship from the Delta Nu Alpha Foundation due to her hard work and dedication to school. This is one of three annual scholarships awarded nationally.

“She has done exceptionally well in her classes, and she demonstrates a maturity above many students,” Bart Jennings, associate professor of marketing and finance, said. “She is most deserving of this scholarship and recognition.”

Delta Nu Alpha is an international organization designed to promote and provide support to a network of professionals throughout the transportation industry. According to the Delta Nu Alpha website, the cornerstone of Delta Nu Alpha is its emphasis on education. The organization thrives on providing financial assistance and mentoring for students involved at any level of the transportation and logistics fields of study.

“This scholarship provides me the opportunity to further my education. School has been the ultimate challenge, but there are so many great teachers at Western,” Staton said.

When Staton graduates in May 2007, she plans to continue a family tradition and find a job in the transportation industry.

“Balancing work, school and family is difficult, but the entire family learns from the experience and is better because of it,” she said.
