MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University Associate Physics Professor Igor Shovkovy will introduce the NOVA: “Monster of the Milky Way” program, which will air on Network Knowledge public television for central and western Illinois Tuesday, Oct. 31.

The program examining black holes, what they are and their role in the life and death of galaxies will be aired at 7 p.m. (CST) Oct. 31 on WMEC Channel 6 in Macomb. It will replay at midnight and 4 a.m.

Shovkovy, whose field of research includes high-energy and nuclear physics as well as astrophysics, will tape his 90-second introduction at WesternÂ’s University Television studios Monday, Oct. 30. The first-year WIU faculty member earned his Ph.D. in physics (1997) at the Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics and his masterÂ’s in physics (1993) at Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University in his home country of Ukraine. He served as a research associate (Oct. 2002-Sept. 2004) and a junior fellow (Oct. 2004-Aug. 2006) at J.W. Goethe University, Germany, before joining WesternÂ’s faculty.

Western partnered with PBS, allowing a WIU faculty expert to introduce one program the University selects from the PBS monthly lineup. A presidential committee selects the program and the faculty member. Introductions have been airing since Spring 2006. These include: John Simmons, philosophy and religious studies, for “Empires: Holy Warriors” (April); Richard Ness, broadcasting, for “American Masters – John Ford/John Wayne: The Filmmaker and the Legend” (May); Matt Bean, music, for “American Masters – Cole Porter” (June); and Nancy Kwang Johnson, African American studies, for “Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution” (September).
