MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- Four candidates for the Western Illinois University College of Arts and Sciences dean position will be on campus for interviews beginning Monday, March 1, according to College of Fine Arts and Communication Dean Paul Kreider, chair of the search committee.
The candidates include Susan Martinelli-Fernandez, interim College of Arts and Sciences dean at Western, Monday and Tuesday, March 1-2; John La Duke, associate dean of Arts and Sciences, University of North Dakota, Monday and Tuesday, March 8-9; Wolfgang Natter, director of the Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical and Cultural Thought, Virginia Tech, Monday and Tuesday, March 22-23; and William Rosa, former associate dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Montclair State University (NJ), Monday and Tuesday, March 29-30.
The two-day interviews for each candidate will include sessions with administrators, faculty, staff and students on the WIU-Macomb and WIU-Quad Cities campuses. Interview schedules and resumes will be available online at wiu.edu/employment.
On the WIU-Macomb campus, an open meeting with faculty, administrative and civil service staff and students will be held at 3 p.m. in the Morgan Hall 109 March 1 (Martinelli-Fernandez); March 8 (La Duke); March 22 (Natter); and March 29 (Rosa). Members of the Macomb and QC campuses and communities are encouraged to attend the open session for each candidate.
On the WIU-Quad Cities campus, open meetings (faculty, administrative and civil service staff and students) with each candidate will be held at 2 p.m. March 2 (Martinelli-Fernandez); at 11 a.m. March 9 (La Duke); at 1 p.m. March 23 (Natter); and 11 a.m. March 30 (Rosa).
Martinelli-Fernandez has served as interim dean of the WIU College of Arts and Sciences since July 2009. She is also serving concurrently as associate dean, a position she has held since 2005. She is also a professor of philosophy, and has served as a faculty member in the philosophy and religious studies department since 1993. Martinelli-Fernandez served as the interim associate director of Western's Centennial Honors College (2004-05). Prior to joining Western's faculty, she was an adjunct faculty member at the College of St. Francis (now University of St. Francis) (1988-89) and at Mundelein College (now Loyola University) (1988). She has worked as assistant to the director of Weekend College at Mundelein (1982-1983) and was the office manager of Lukas-Lippert Film Productions and Essanay Studio and Lighting Co. in Chicago (1973-1993). Martinelli-Fernandez earned her doctorate and master's degrees from the University of Chicago and her bachelor's degree from Mundelein College.
La Duke has served as associate dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Dakota since July 2006. He is also a biology professor, a position he has held since August 1996. He joined the University of North Dakota faculty in August 1980. La Duke has also served as the interim associate vice president for research and economic development at North Dakota (2009), and served two three-year terms as chair of the biology department (1997-2003), as well as chair of the art department (2001-2002). La Duke earned his doctorate degree from The Ohio State University, and his master's and bachelor's degrees from Texas Tech University.
Natter has served as director of the Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical and Cultural Thought at Virginia Tech since 2005. He is also a political science professor, a position he has held since 2005. Prior to working at Virginia Tech, Natter was a geography and German studies professor at the University of Kentucky (2004-05). He joined the University of Kentucky faculty as an assistant professor in Germanic Languages and Literatures in 1987. Natter has also served as director of graduate studies for the geography department at Kentucky (2004-05) and has served as the executive director of the International Social Theory Consortium since 2002. He was the Leibniz Professor at Leipzig University (2000-01). Natter was the founder and coordinator of the University of Kentucky German Studies Program (1996-2000) and director of undergraduate studies, department of Germanic Languages and Literatures (1991-93). Natter earned his doctorate and master's degrees from The Johns Hopkins University and his bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University.
Rosa served as associate dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University (NJ), from 2002-2008. He is a professor in Montclair's Spanish and Italian department, a position he has held since 2002. Previously, Rosa was the chair of the department of languages and cultures at William Paterson University (Wayne, NJ) (1996-2001) and was a faculty member in the department of languages and cultures and modern languages at Paterson (1986-2002). Rosa has also served as a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse (1984-1986) and at Wright State University (1983-1984), and he taught Spanish for the Department of Public Education in Bayamon, Puerto Rico (1972-75). Rosa earned his doctorate degree from The Ohio State University, his master's degree from Michigan State University and his bachelor's degree from Universidad de Puerto Rico.
The dean of the College of Arts and Sciences is the chief academic officer for the college and is responsible to the provost and the president of the University. In consultation with representative faculty committees, the dean carries out the educational policies of the college and University and serves as a representative on standing and ad hoc administrative committees. The dean reviews internal policies and the mission and goals of the college to ensure that they are in accord with those of the University and the Board of Trustees. The dean coordinates the activities of assistant and associate deans, department chairs, and support staff relating to the development and growth of the college and its departments. The dean is charged with the overall responsibility for planning, developing, and evaluating academic programs; recruitment, evaluation, and retention of faculty; fiscal management of the college budget; and communication to and among faculty and the administration.
