MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Provost and Academic Vice President Jack Thomas announced today (June 28) a "Notification of Intent to Reorganize" to merge Western's Center for International Studies (CIS) with the School of Extended Studies (SES), following the retirement of current CIS Director Terry Rodenberg, according to Thomas.

Richard Carter, SES director, will serve as director of the combined units (CIS and SES). CIS includes international admissions, study abroad and Western's English as a Second Language (WESL) Institute, while the School of Extended Studies oversees nontraditional programs, the Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts degree program, non-credit programming and distance learning initiatives. The school's name will be changed at a later date to reflect the addition of CIS. Western's School of Extended Studies is under the direction of the Provost and Academic Vice President.

"Combining the Center for International Studies with the School of Extended Studies will result in a cost savings of approximately $175,000," Thomas added. "Because of the many similarities between the two divisions, such as the relationship between study abroad and non-credit programs and distance learning, it made sense to combine into one centralized division to further enhance the programs, while reducing costs."

SES will remain housed in Horrabin Hall. While some CIS programs will remain in Seal Hall, following the Memorial Hall renovation, select CIS divisions will move to Memorial.

Rodenberg, who will retire Aug. 15, has served as CIS director since July 2007. Carter joined the WIU engineering technology department (formerly called industrial technology) in August 1989, and was named director of nontraditional programs in July 1999.
