MACOMB, IL -- The chapter coordinator of Western Illinois University's Eta Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society invites qualified WIU faculty, staff and students to apply for membership on or before Friday, Sept. 17. According to Kevin Timlin, assistant director of WIU's Center for International Studies and the chapter coordinator, membership in Western's award-winning Eta Epsilon chapter of the international honor society is based on academic criteria and international experience. (Information about eligibility for membership in Phi Beta Delta is available at www.wiu.edu/international_studies/phi_beta_delta/Membership.php.)

Timlin noted that while the Eta Epsilon chapter just started at WIU last year, they have already received an award for Outstanding Regional Chapter.

"We were notified about the award last spring," Timlin said. "Our chapter was nominated for the award primarily due to the creation of the 'Western Community, Global Opportunities' television series. The series, which airs regularly on UTV3, features 15-minute segments, each highlighting a different international endeavor undertaken by WIU students, faculty and/or staff. People are often surprised to find out just how much international activity is undertaken at WIU. The TV program will give us a chance to shine a light on these projects and hopefully inspire others to engage in internationally focused projects."

The current plan for the series is to produce and air three to four new segments per semester, he added.

The aim of Phi Beta Delta is to recognize and encourage professional, intellectual, academic and personal achievements in the field of international education, Timlin noted. The chapter encourages international programming and promotes the exchange of ideas and information among an interdisciplinary network of faculty, staff, students, community members and alumni involved in international endeavors.

"As of right now, we have 25 members. The first membership class was only open to faculty, staff, alumni and Macomb community members. But, as of the Fall 2010 semester, we will also induct qualified students into the chapter," Timlin said.
