MACOMB, IL – Four Western Illinois University employees will be honored for community service and commitment to the University during a Tuesday, April 24 Service Recognition Reception. The reception begins at 7 p.m. in the University Union Lamoine Room.

Community Service Award
Linda Wade, library operations associate in the Leslie F. Malpass Library, will be given a community service award.

In the community, Wade volunteers as a member of the Brown County Public Library District Board, serving as secretary. She is also active in the rescue of sick and abused pets and makes donations to the McDonough County Humane Society.

Wade also donates her time to preparing petitions under the Endangered Species Act, writing columns for the Galesburg Center of Independent Living, helping the elderly in her neighborhood and crocheting afghans for people in her hometown and in the WIU community.

Wade's nominator said "Linda carries out an amazing array of community work that makes her a top candidate for this award. Ms. Wade volunteers with no expectation of anything in return and embodies Western's core value of social responsibility."

Civil Service Recognition and Service Awards
Judy Thompson, office manager of the WIU School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration (LEJA) and Sergeant Derek Watts and Officer Jason Lytle, both of the WIU Office of Public Safety, will be recognized during the ceremony with Civil Service Recognition and Service Awards.

Thompson was nominated by numerous professors and administrators in the (LEJA) department, who said she keeps the office running smoothly.

"On a daily basis, Judy responds to requests for help from 33 full- and part-time faculty, five graduate assistants, other office staff and WIU employees and a steady stream of equipment maintenance people," one nominator said.

Another nominator said Thompson sacrifices her lunch hours and personal time to ensure the school's needs are met.

"Her greatest strength is her attitude toward the University and the faculty and staff within the school," the nominating letter stated. "Both WIU employees and the public are well served by her competence and professionalism. She contributes to the efficiency of the school's operation by her extensive knowledge of procedures and protocols and her innovative approaches to new challenges."

Watts and Lytle were nominated for a March incident in Simpkins Hall, where they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a graduate student who was having a heart attack. When the two officers responded to the medical call, the student was not breathing and did not have a pulse.

The officers performed CPR and used a portable defibrillator on the student and he eventually began to breathe on his own. He was treated by emergency medical personnel from McDonough District Hospital and was taken by helicopter to a Peoria hospital for further treatment.

"It can be said that this student would not be here (without their actions)," one of the nominators said. "It is thanks to dedicated officers like this that our campus is a safe place."

Lytle was also nominated for his work within the department as a master firearms instructor and training of other officers.

During the same reception, employees with 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service to WIU will be honored, including:
