WIU Collegiate FFA Hosts Career Development Event

MACOMB, IL -- Illinois high school students got a taste of applying for a job and interviewing for a position last week at Western Illinois University.
More than 65 FFA members from 18 high schools across the state participated in Western's Collegiate FFA Chapter inaugural Invitational Interview Career Development Event (CDE) Feb. 16. According to WIU agriculture assistant professor and Collegiate FFA adviser Andy Baker, the winner of the competition will represent the state of Illinois at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY in October.
Participants had to complete a standardized job application, a 20-minute job interview, a telephone interview and construct a follow-up letter. Prior to the competition, the students submitted a resume, cover letter and three letters of reference. Their resume and cover letter were judged and added to their overall score. Baker said that 15 WIU Collegiate FFA members assisted the students, along with 10 Western agriculture students and several WIU faculty members.
The state winner was Jamie Bartosik from the Waterloo FFA Chapter. The state runner-up was Kent Leesman from the Hartsburg-Emden FFA Chapter.
FFA chapters competing included Avon, Barry, Blue Ridge (Farmer City), Bushnell, Canton, Cuba, Delavan, Genoa-Kingston, Hartsburg-Emden, Liberty, Midland, Midwest Central (Manito), Minooka, Morton, Seneca, Spoon River Valley, Southwestern (Piasa) and Waterloo.
