"Girls Plus Math" equals fun at WIU

MACOMB, IL -- Did you know that test results show a 13:1 ratio of boys to girls who score at least 700 out of 800 on the math section of the SAT college admission test? To help bridge that gap, Western Illinois University's summer program "Girls Plus Math" is designed to promote interest in mathematics, willingness to take risks, self-confidence and the motivation needed for effective problem solving in girls ages 12 and 13.
"Girls Plus Math" will be held Sunday - Friday, July 21-26 and will accept 25 campers on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers will reside in air-conditioned cabins at WIU's Horn Field campus in Macomb.
The WIU department of mathematics teaches the instructional portion of the camp. The girls will be exposed to Western's state-of-the-art laboratories, computer facilities and the most up-to-date hand-held technology from Texas Instruments. In addition, professional women are scheduled to present at the camp to show participants how they use math in their careers.
The registration fee is $339 and includes tuition, supplies, extracurricular activities and room and board. There is no program for commuter students.
Participants are supervised by program faculty and carefully selected resident counselors to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
The camp is sponsored by WIU's School of Extended and Continuing Education and math department.
