WIU Agriculture Student Selected for Prestigious Agriculture Award

MACOMB, IL -- A Western Illinois University agriculture student was one of only two Illinois college students to receive an undergraduate research award from the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA).
Vince Davis, a senior from Macomb, was one of seven U.S. college students to receive the 2002 award based on his research proposal, "Pre-emergence Herbicide Screening for Cuphea." WIU agriculture professor Gordon Roskamp and assistant professor of agriculture Win Phippen were Davis' sponsors. Davis received a $1,000 stipend for his research proposal.
"This is a terrific honor for Vince and for the agriculture department," Roskamp said. "The fact that Vince's proposal was one of just seven selected says volumes about his caliber of work."
The WSSA undergraduate student research grant is designed to encourage and involved exceptional undergraduates in agricultural research. In order to be considered, students must prepare a two-three page research proposal describing the expected results and their possible significance to weed science.
Weed Science Society of America promotes the development of weed science and technology and the high standards of education, research, extension, regulation and other matters pertaining to weed science. The society also works with other disciplines, administrators and governmental agencies to promote integration and adaptation of weed science and technology for maximum benefit to efficient, sustainable agriculture and natural resources.
