Western Illinois Senior Olympics April 19-20 at WIU

MACOMB, IL - - The 22nd annual Western Illinois Senior Olympics, for individuals who are at least 50 years old, will be held Friday and Saturday, April 19-20 at Western Illinois University. The Olympics are open to any senior residing in the U.S.

Seniors will compete across nine age divisions for men and women, set in five-year groups: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89 and 90 to the oldest participant. Competitive events include swimming, track and field, golf, horseshoes, miniature golf, basketball free throw, biking and bowling.

Events will run from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 19, followed by a 6 p.m. social; and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20. Olympic headquarters will be in the WIU Student Recreation Center. Proof of age (driver's license, birth certificate) is required at check-in.

The Senior Olympics program is structured to encourage individuals of all ages to examine and develop their personal exercise program, to provide an opportunity for older individuals to participate against their peers in regulated events and to focus attention on the importance of regular physical exercise in lifelong health, according to George Hermann, co-coordinator of the annual event hosted at Western. Hermann and co-coordinator Dee Hinds are WIU emeritus physical education professors.
