MACOMB, IL -- As technology continues to advance by leaps and bounds, its future is limited only by imagination.

Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) will host its third annual Tech Fest Thursday, April 11 to explore the future of technology. Tech Fest will feature a keynote speaker along with a combination of technology exhibits, classroom demonstrations and hands-on training in a variety of technology applications. The day-long event is open to the WIU campus, the Macomb community and K-12 teachers and administrators.

David Thornburg, director of global operations for the Thornburg Center and senior fellow of the Congressional Institute for the Future, will kick off the day at 9:30 a.m. in the Horrabin Hall Theatre with his keynote address “Renaissance Two: A Glimpse of the Future." Thornburg is an award winning futurist, author and consultant whose clients range across public and private sectors in the United States and Brazil. Based on historical precedent, his presentation will explore why we are poised at the edge of an era of unprecedented creativity and exploration that will transform all aspects of work, education and life.

From 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., participants are invited aboard the “Tech Trek” showcase of technology-rich projects and applications throughout COEHS and the Macomb community. COEHS faculty and students will demonstrate technology’s enhancement of teaching and learning through topics such as “Teaching Without a Text,” “Using Industry Software in the Fashion Retail Classroom” and “Electronic Testing: Saving Time in the Classroom.” Area K-12 teachers are invited to attend demonstrations and to learn about professional development opportunities for teachers both on-site and on-line through CAIT (Center for the Application of Information Technologies). Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU’s) are available for teachers seeking recertification.

New this year to Tech Fest is sponsor Citizens National Bank and several representatives from the Macomb community. The Illinois State Police, McDonough District Hospital, the Macomb Fire Department, LaSalle Street Securities, Suite 202 Hair Design and Camera Land will be on hand to demonstrate how technology has influenced how they provide services and conduct business. Area residents are encouraged to take advantage of five hands-on training sessions in COEHSÂ’ Interactive Multimedia Lab, including desktop publishing, Power Point, Adobe PhotoDeluxe, Web page creation and Internet basics.

All events will take place in Horrabin Hall on the WIU campus and will conclude with a 2:30 p.m. reception hosted by WIU President David R. Taylor and Macomb Mayor Tom Carper. Lunch will be available through SodexhoÂ’s Snackers in the Horrabin Hall gymnasium.

Tech Fest 2002 is sponsored by COEHS, The Center for the Application of Information Technologies (CAIT), the CATALISE Project and Citizens National Bank. For further details, contact the COEHS DeanÂ’s Office at 309/298-1690 or visit www.cait.org/coehs for a complete schedule of events.
