Pettit Named Interim Chair of Philosophy and Religious Studies Dept.

MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University Professor Gordon Pettit has been named the interim chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies effective Aug. 1.

Pettit has been a member of the department's faculty since 2000 and was promoted to professor in 2009.

After receiving his bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Iowa, Pettit received his master of divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a master's degree in philosophy from Texas A & M University and his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame.

Pettit's work has been published in American Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophical Studies, Journal of Philosophical Research and Philosophia Christi. He has been a member of the American Philosophical Association (APA) since 1993 and has presented papers at four APA conferences, as well as a member of the Society of Christian Philosophers (SCP) since 1993 and presented papers at five SCP conferences.

At Western, Pettit teaches the philosophy of religion, metaphysics and ancient philosophy and has developed and taught two online courses, one in logic and reasoning and another in contemporary moral problems.

Pettit has served as the secretary of Faculty Senate, chair of the College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee, chair of the Philosophy Program Review Committee and has been the chair of the department personnel committee three times.
