Changes Made to Mary Olive Woods Scholarships

MACOMB, IL – Some changes to scholarship programs named for Mary Olive Woods will mean more scholarship opportunities for Western Illinois University students.

The scholarship program and the annual Mary Olive Woods Lecture are sponsored by Woods' 1987 trust fund donation to Western. The scholarship program now offers four scholarships to students majoring or minoring in philosophy or religious studies.

The new arrangement offers:

• The Mary Olive Woods Academic Excellence Scholarships: These scholarships are given to a religious studies major who is enrolled in a philosophy course or a philosophy major enrolled in a religious studies course. Applicants must be full-time students with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and a minimum of 30 hours of course work completed. An essay must be completed to qualify.

There are up to two scholarships available for $6,000 each year.

• The Mary Olive Woods Academic Achievement Scholarships: These scholarships are available for students majoring in religious studies or philosophy who are enrolled in a religious studies course. Applicants must be full-time students with a minimum GPA of 3.25 or an incoming freshman with an ACT score of 28 or higher and a minimum high school grade point average of at least 3.5. An essay must be completed to qualify.

There are up to two scholarships available for $3,000 each year.

• The Mary Olive Woods Academic Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students majoring in religious studies or philosophy who are enrolled in a religious studies course. Applicants must be full-time students with a minimum GPA of 3.5 overall or in the major. For incoming freshmen to be eligible, they must have an ACT score of 26 or higher and a minimum GPA of 3.25. An essay must be completed to qualify.

The scholarship amount is $1,500 per year.

• The Mary Olive Woods Religious Studies Minor Scholarship: This scholarship is for full-time students minoring in religious studies. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in religious studies and a written essay must be completed to qualify.

The scholarship amount is up to $1,000 each year. The department will decide the amount of the scholarship and the number of scholarships to be awarded each year.

No student may receive more than one Mary Olive Woods scholarship in the same academic year.
