Internationally Known Poet To Speak At WIU

Internationally known poet Eavan Boland will visit Western Illinois University Thursday, April 4 through Friday, April 5. Boland will give a reading from her most recent poems at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4 in the Horrabin Hall Theatre, and she will give a lecture on writing at 10 a.m. Friday, April 5 in Simpkins Hall 327.
The author of eight volumes of poetry, Boland has been called "one of Irelands finest contemporary writers" by Booklist. Her poetry combines Irish history and politics with a strong sense of feminism and the female experience. Boland has won numerous awards including the Foundation Award in Poetry and the American Ireland Literary Fund.
Boland, who was born in Dublin, Ireland, is a professor of English at Stanford University in California. She is also the director of the Stanfords Creative Writing Program. When not at Stanford, Boland lives in Ireland with her husband and two daughters.
Her appearance at Western is made possible by the WIU department of English and journalism and a gift from the Fred E. and Lola Austin Case Endowment to Western Illinois University. Bolands visit signifies the inaugural event in the Lola Austin Case Visiting Authors Series, which provides extended residencies for visiting writers and greater opportunities for more interaction between students and established writers.
