MACOMB, IL -- The national interactive teleconference “How Are We Doing? Assessing the Use of Technology in Teacher Education” will be broadcast live from Western Illinois University's Memorial Hall studios from noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16. Horrabin Hall 45 will be open for local viewing of the broadcast.

In the last 10 years, the use of technology in teaching and learning has evolved from a luxury to an expectation. Policymakers, state agencies, accreditation organizations and other stakeholders want to know how teacher education programs are preparing future teachers to use technology. This program will consider how universities can assess their teacher education programÂ’s and their teacher candidatesÂ’ technology readiness, and will highlight models and strategies that have been identified as promising practices in teacher education technology assessment and integration.

Program panel members include Art Wise, president and CEO of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE); Kenneth “Casey” Green, founder and director of The Campus Computing Project and a visiting scholar at the Center for Educational Studies of the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA; Vicki Suter, director of the National Learning Infrastructure Initiative (NLII) sponsored by EDUCAUSE; and John Ittelson, executive director and principal investigator for the CalState TEACH Technology Enhancement Project and professor at California State University, Monterey Bay. Don Nelson, WIU College of Education and Human Services associate dean, will moderate the program.

The 90-minute broadcast is sponsored by the U.S. Department of EducationÂ’s (USDE) Preparing Teachers to Use Technology ProgramÂ’s CATALISE Project and USDEÂ’s United Star Distance Learning Consortium (USDLC) Engaged Learning Star Schools Project. WIU is the lead institution for both the CATALISE and Engaged Learning Star Schools Projects.
