MACOMB, IL -- It's the perfect way to celebrate spring: Climbing a 40-foot structure in the woods and rapelling down the other side while listening to a local band performing in the background.

Western Illinois University's Horn Field Campus will host the first "Climb and Conquer" competition from 2-6 p.m. Friday, April 26 at Horn's climbing and rapelling tower, a 40-foot vertical wood structure, complete with rock-like handholds. Persons ages 13 and up are invited to participate in the inaugural climbing challenge. Entry fee is $5 a person. First place awards will be given to the fastest male and female climbers at the "easy," "challenging" and "daring" levels.

Larry A's Pizza of Macomb will sell pizza by the slice and beverages from Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Macomb. The band, "Go Ask Brian," will provide musical entertainment beginning at 2 p.m., while Modern Rock 95.9 will broadcast live from the event. WIU Campus Recreation will provide a shuttle from the Student Recreation Center to Horn Field at 2 p.m., returning to campus at 6 p.m. Parking is also available at Horn Field Campus. The competition will begin at 2:30, and an awards ceremony will be held following the final climb.

Campus Recreation will also provide shuttle service to Horn from 2-5 p.m. Friday, April 19 for those who want to practice shimmying up a 40-foot climbing wall before the actual competition.

Additional sponsors of the "Climb and Conquer" competition are Citizens National Bank, Infobahn Outfitters, The Cafe and the Macomb Dairy Queen.
