MACOMB, IL -- "Stranger danger," bicycle safety and nutrition will be just some of the topics to be presented at a special health fair at Western Illinois University for pre-K and kindergarten students Friday, April 19.

The WIU community health and health services management department, in conjunction with the McDonough County Health Department, will host the fair from 9 a.m. to noon for nearly 100 area children. Six booths will feature such themes as "stranger danger" (body and personal safety); animal safety; bicycle, school bus and seatbelt safety; nutrition; general health and hygiene; and an anti-smoking campaign featuring Samantha the Skunk.

"This is a terrific opportunity to teach young children about the importance of health and safety in their lives," explained Jamie Applewick, WIU community health graduate assistant. "We will have handouts, games and a lot of fun information designed for four- and five-year-olds."

In addition to Western's community health and health services management department and the county health department, other participating agencies include the Western Illinois Regional Council (WIRC), State Farm Insurance, McDonough County Animal Control and WIU's Office of Public Safety. The Union Bookstore, Drs. Fitzgerald and Frazier DDS, the Macomb Dental Center, Spirit in the Sky and McDonough District Hospital have provided several items for the fair. Eta Sigma Gamma, community health education honorary, and Tri Sigma sorority will provide volunteers for the event.
