Professor Emeritus Thompson Obituary

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Psychology Professor Emeritus Bettye Thompson passed away Monday, March 10 in Olympia, Wa.

At her request, Thompson was cremated and her extended family will hold a memorial service in early June in Fredericksburg, TX.

Thompson taught at WIU for 17 years, retiring in 1995. She was an associate professor in home economics and later served as director of the University's gerontology program in the WIU Department of Psychology.

Prior to coming to WIU in 1978, Thompson taught in the sociology and social work departments of Texan Woman's University. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska and her master's and doctorate degrees from Texas Woman's University.

The Bettye D. Thompson Scholarship in Gerontology, through the WIU Department of Psychology, was established in 2013 by friends and colleagues. Memorial contributions can be made to that scholarship fund, in care of the WIU Foundation, 1 University Circle, or by visiting wiu.edu/giving.
