MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University students and faculty in the University Dance Theatre (UDT) will present the annual Spring Gala Dance Concert at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, April 25-27 in the Brophy Hall Dance Theatre.

In conjunction with the Gala, a display of dance photographs by Charles Harrison, titled "The Art and Toil of Dance" featuring WIU and Knox College dance theatres, is on exhibit through May 12 at Sullivan Taylor Coffee House on the Macomb Square.

The Spring Gala Concert will include works choreographed by UDT students, a UDT alumna and a professional choreographer/dancer.

Student choreographers include Jenny Showalter, a junior physical education major from Aurora and UDT president, who created a piece for 11 dancers called "On the Edge;" Sarah Rawski, a junior recreation, park and tourism administration major from Arlington Heights, created a solo titled "Half" and a comical piece for seven dancers called "Soul Cool;" Debi Travis, a junior communication major from Glenview, choreographed a piece for nine dancers; Jess Bliss, a sophomore music major from Palos Hills, has a work for eight dancers called "Life: A celebration of frustration, success, glory and the memories in between;" and Sara Parish, a junior physical education major from Jerseyville, choreographed a dance of hope and survival for six dancers.

WIU alumna and Macomb native Maureen Miner has a dance for a trio in the production called "not out of, but through." Miner performs with the Shelter Repertory Dance Theatre in Duluth, MN.

Laurie Eisenhower, owner of Eisenhower Dance Ensemble (Rochester, MI), set a piece for eight dancers called "The Citizens," which was inspired by minimum-wage immigrant workers in the U.S.

University Dance Theatre, directed by physical education faculty Candace Winters-March and Heidi Clemmens, has gained national attention by appearing - - by invitation - - at the American College Dance Festival National Gala in 1998 and 2000.

Tickets for the Spring Gala will be available at the door. Admission is $5 for the public and $4 for students and seniors. For more information, call 309-298-2116 or 298-1981.
