MACOMB, IL — More than 150 science educators recently came together on the Western Illinois University Macomb campus to update their science teaching skills at the 28th Annual PreK-8 Science Update Conference.

The April 25 conference was hosted by faculty and staff in the Maurice G. Kellogg Science Education Center and was supported by Western's College of Education and Human Services and the WIU Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

During the conference, Maria Montalvo, a Macomb Junior High School (MJHS) science teacher, was honored with the Maurice G. Kellogg Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. Montalvo, a Macomb native, has taught science at MJHS for 17 years. In addition to her classroom teaching, she has coached the MJHS Illinois Science Olympiad team for 16 years.

Montalvo earned her bachelor's degree in biology and her master's degree in educational and interdisciplinary studies from WIU.

Bestowed by the WIU Maurice G. Kellogg Science Education Center, the Kellogg Award for Excellence in Science Teaching recognizes a preK-8 teacher's devotion and contribution to science education. The award is given in honor of WIU Professor Emeritus Maurice Kellogg, who taught science education at Western and at the WIU Lab School from 1958-90.
