MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) hosted six visiting Chinese education officials April 23 and 24. The cross-cultural visit was a follow-up to a trip made to China in March by three WIU representatives.

Don Nelson, COEHS associate dean; Lourdes Kuthy-Saenger, associate professor in the department of educational and interdisciplinary studies; and Rhonda Grover of International Programs traveled to Shenyang in the Liaoning Province of northeastern China during WIU’s spring break. Shenyang, a city of eight million, has established a Sister City relationship with Chicago, and Illinois and Liaoning have been designated as “Sister States.”

While in Macomb, the Chinese delegation met with WIU President David R. Taylor and Provost Eric Stiffler along with administrators from the College of Education and Human Services, the Center for the Application of Instructional Technologies and the WesternÂ’s English as a Second Language International Office. The group also toured MacombÂ’s Lincoln School and High School accompanied by Fran Karanovich, superintendent of Macomb schools.

“I am positive that the dialogue between the educators at Western Illinois University and those in Liaoning Province will continue," Taylor added. "As a former teacher and as a University administrator, it’s always a pleasure to meet and talk to educators who have similar and different perspectives on teaching and learning.”
