WIU Faculty Member Named Teacher of the Year by Department's Students

MACOMB, IL -- Dennis Sigwart, a professor in Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s department of community health and health services management, was recently named Teacher of the Year.

Students in the department voted from the faculty who were nominated for the award by a five-member student committee comprised of three undergraduate and two graduate students. Faculty nominated for the award were judged on the following criteria: commitment and passion for the profession; teaching style; knowledge of subject matter; professionalism; and availability outside of class.

Sigwart has been a member of the health education faculty since 1973. During his time at Western he has obtained more than $175,000 in federal grants and served as a post doctorate fellow at Tulane University School of Medicine. He was named the Outstanding Teaching Professor in the College of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at WIU in 1985. Prior to joining Western's faculty, Sigwart was an environmental sanitarian in Morgantown, WV, and served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a 13-month tour of duty in Vietnam.

Sigwart received his bachelor's and master's degrees from West Virginia University and his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Education Resource Division of the National Safety Council. Sigwart has participated in televised programming to France on occupational safety and health; presented "The Macomb/WIU DUI Project" to the National Safety Congress; served as a presider at several National Safety Congress sessions; and has authored numerous articles for several professional publications.
