Sandage to Present "Last Lecture" Thursday

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University College of Arts and Sciences Student Council will present the Last Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in Morgan Hall, room 109.
Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology Diane Sandage will present "Mother Earth and All Our Relations: Where Compassion and Spirit Meet the Bone."
The Last Lecture presentation will allow Sandage to share reflections from her life's journey and to speak to students as if it were the last lecture she was ever going to present. Sandage will discuss the potential harm done by accepting or believing that "there are no alternatives." Sandage, a WIU alumna with 30 years of teaching experience, studies indigenous cultures and teaches Native American spirituality and social justice issues.
The concept of a "Last Lecture" became nationally recognized in 2007, with Randy Pausch, who gave his "Last Lecture" speech on Sept. 18, 2007, at Carnegie Mellon University.
Pausch's best-selling book by the same name was chosen as WIU's First Year Experience reading selection for 2010-2011. Since Pausch's presentation, the "Last Lecture" concept has been popularized and offered on college campuses throughout the United States.
Thursday's presentation is part of the University's First Year Experience.
