MACOMB, IL — Students and faculty members from Western Illinois University's Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) will perform at the "Dickens on the Square" annual holiday event in Macomb, which is sponsored by the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development Corporation. "Dickens on the Square" is set for 4:30-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5 and for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 and is open free to the public.

According to Frances Steward, WIU C&I professor, she recruited students from two of her courses to participate this year.

"Students in my C&I 476 ["Community Involvement"] and RDG 433 ["Corrective Reading"] will join C&I faculty members Megan Lyons and Monica Wright, as well as myself, in reading holiday stories to children and parents, singing, taking part in live window displays depicting Victorian times and strolling around the Square in Victorian costumes enhancing the atmosphere of the event. Students from WIU's Mortar Board International Honor Society will also participate," she added.

Steward said this year's theme is "Jingle Bells," and the event will feature horse-drawn carriage rides, visits with Santa Claus, American Girl doll teas, the annual Festival of Trees, a children's shopping mall and other activities and musical entertainment.

Dickens on the Square is also sponsored by Key Realtors.
