Karl Schnoor worked hard to get the most out of his education at Western Illinois University, and his academics and extracurricular activities have prepared him well for a successful career and productive life.

On May 11, Schnoor graduated from WIU as the Spring 2002 College of Education and Human Services College Scholar and the Family and Consumer Sciences Departmental Scholar and Honors Scholar, while earning the highest academic distinction of Summa Cum Laude.

Schnoor, from Elizabeth, combined experience as a resort banquet cook with his major study of dietetics, his minors in chemistry and management and his work as a food services aide at McDonough District Hospital in his educational training at Western. He earned numerous scholarships and awards recognizing academic excellence and participated in a variety of service and leadership roles with the University and throughout the Macomb community.

"A large part of my education has come from outside of class," Schnoor said. "Exploring the array of organizations and activities has given me leadership abilities, multicultural experiences, survival skills and fun memories.

"By making the most of curricular and extracurricular activities in the WIU career, I have grown mentally, professionally and spiritually," he added.

Schnoor was active in Hall Government and he served as a Student Government Association Senator. He was president and public relations co-chair for the Student Association for Nutrition Education; served as technical correspondent and secretary for the Chemistry Club; was a peer academic mentor; served as president of Western's Lutheran Student Fellowship and treasurer of the organization's two-state regional chapter; coordinated the family and consumer sciences web page; and volunteered with Loaves and Fishes food pantry in Macomb.

Beginning this fall, Schnoor will serve a 10-month comprehensive dietetic internship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, after which he will sit for the registered dietician exam. He then plans to pursue a master's degree in nutrition or food chemistry toward a career in clinical nutrition.

Karl is the son of Robert and Luise Schnoor.
