Beef and Forage Field Day

MACOMB, IL -- Beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20, cattle producers and other interested individuals are invited to attend the Western Illinois University Beef and Forage Field Day at the University's agriculture department's Kerr Farm. The Kerr Farm is located two miles west of the WIU Livestock Center on the south side of Tower Road, or three miles west of Route 67 on Tower Road.
A trade show will be held from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Program sessions will begin at 2:30 p.m. Topics to be offered include "Fencing and water systems for managed grazing" by Jay Solomon, University of Illinois Extension; "Forage varieties" by Steve Hollister, NRCS agronomist, and Gerry Kaiser, NRCS plant materials specialist; "Fescue management and frost seeding" by Dean Oswald, University of Illinois Extension, and Roger Staff, NRCS grazing land specialist; and "Pasture weed management" by Sean Evans, University of Illinois Extension.
"This field day is an excellent opportunity for producers to learn more about making better use of their grasslands and forage resources by utilizing managed grazing," said Ken Nimrick, WIU assistant professor of agriculture and field day co-coordinator.
A dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. followed by a tour of Kerr Farm pastures and presentations of WIU research projects by Nimrick and John Carlson of WIU's agriculture department. Ongoing research projects that will be discussed include extending the grazing season; winter grazing standing corn; pasture weaning of beef calves; and profitability of grazing beef stockers on improved forage varieties.
