Kid U in June at WIU for Kids Grades 4-8

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University College of Education and Human Services and Department of Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising and Hospitality (DFMH) will offer Kid U, designed for students in grades 4-8, for two weeks in June. The first session (Week 1) is set for 8 a.m.-12 noon Monday-Thursday, June 8-11, and the second session (Week 2) is set for 8 a.m.-noon Monday-Thursday, June 15-18.

Youngsters can mix and match sessions based on their individual interests (sessions listed below). Cost per session is $50 or two sessions for $85. (One session is a two-hour class offered daily, Monday-Thursday.)

Deadline to register is Monday, June 1. More information is available at www.wiu.edu/kidu/. Registration can be completed online.

8-10 a.m. — Creative Cooking

  • Monday — Practical Knife Skills
  • Tuesday — Incredible Edible Eggs
  • Wednesday — Vegetables
  • Thursday — Fat Substitutions

8-10 a.m. — Tropical Paradise (Fashion Design)

  • Monday — Beach Bags
  • Tuesday — Tie-Dyed Beach Towels
  • Wednesday — Floral Headbands
  • Thursday — Beach Cover-Ups

10 a.m.-noon — Chef Science Goes to the Kitchen

  • Monday — Sugar: Fine or Coarse? (Which is better for cake?)
  • Tuesday — Pop! (Why does popcorn pop?)
  • Wednesday — Potato, Patato (What's so special about potatoes?)
  • Thursday — Say Cheese! (Smile today when you make your own cheese!)

10 a.m.-noon — Baubles and Bling

10 a.m.-noon — Around the World with Chef Science

10 a.m.-noon — Fashion Show Frenzy: Creating Fashion for Parents

  • Thursday — Big Production (Parents are welcome to join the class at 11:30 a.m.)
