WIU Meets with Area Teachers

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) recently sponsored a teacher education program update meeting for local teachers.

According to COEHS Associate Dean Donald Nelson, the purpose of the meeting was to review changing trends and expectations in the field of teacher preparation. Participants also reviewed what the changes will mean to Western's teacher education program and to those who work with WIUÂ’s teacher candidates. Among the topics discussed were changes in Western's teacher education and student teaching programs and WIUÂ’s preparation for its accreditation visit by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in Spring 2003.

Participating teachers included Carol Griffiths, Hamilton; Penny Curtis, Louise Neff, Kim Couza, Judy Witten and Beth Shryock, Macomb; Steve Sargeant, Bushnell- Prairie City; Christine Lewis, Carthage; Ann Keithley, Northwestern (Good Hope); Jenny White, Southeastern (Bowen-Plymouth); and Lori Thompson, West Central Illinois Special Education Cooperative. These and other area teachers will serve as a Teacher Education Program Advisory Council and will meet with Western's teacher educators on a regular basis.
