WIU Celebrates Black History Month 2016

MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University will join in the celebration of February as Black History Month. This year's theme is "Rebirth: Journey to Umoja," celebrating a new beginning and the spirit of unity in the African American community.

Sponsors of WIU's Black History Month commemoration include the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, Black Student Association, WIU Department of African American Studies, the Expanding Cultural Diversity Project and the Latino American Student Organization.

During the 2016 celebration, several WIU departments and student organizations have planned educational programming and events. This year's schedule includes:

Monday, Feb. 1 – 7:30 p.m.
Kick-Off Showcase, University Union Heritage Room

Friday, Feb. 5 – 4:30 p.m.
Culture C.R.U. Kick-Off, Multicultural Center

Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 8-10 – 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
NAACP Bear Sale, University Union

Thursday, Feb. 11 – 4:30 p.m.
NAACP Founder's Day Celebration, University Union Sandburg Lounge

Monday, Feb. 15 – 7:30 p.m.
National Society of Black Engineers Informational Meeting, Multicultural Center

Wednesday, Feb. 17 – 7:30 p.m.
B.S.A. Fashion Show, University Union Grand Ballroom
Tickets: $3 in advance/$5 at the door
