MACOMB, IL -- After spending more than 30 years as a firefighter, most recently as fire chief at the Macomb Fire Department, Don Bytner now teaches future firefighters in Western Illinois University's law enforcement and justice administration (LEJA) department.

Bytner, who had been an adjunct instructor with the LEJA department since 1979, assumed a fulltime teaching position this fall following his retirement as Macomb Fire Department chief. Bytner has taught the fire science class for the department and has instructed in the Open Learning Fire Service Program, which is now offered to all students as a minor in fire administration.

Bytner started his firefighting career in 1970 as a student firefighter. He lived and worked at the fire station in Macomb, learning the trade while obtaining his degree from Western. He holds more than 20 certifications from the Office of the State Fire Marshal of Illinois Division of Personnel Standards and Education. Bytner has been a member of the International Fire Chief Association, Illinois Fire Chief Association and the Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors.
