'African Folklore in Ghana' Interest Meetings Planned in March

MACOMB, IL – Interest meetings for a new Western Illinois University Study Abroad opportunity in Ghana will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, Thursday, March 24 and March 31.

The meetings will be held in Morgan Hall, room 326 on March 9 and in Morgan Hall, room 328 on March 24 and 31.

"African Folklore in Ghana" will be offered during the Fall 2016 semester, with credit offered in either African American studies or foreign languages. Students who apply must have completed at least 12 semester hours, have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and be in good standing with Student Judicial Programs.

All academic majors are welcome to apply and the class is limited to 15 students.

The class offers students a chance to explore African oral and artistic traditions, as well as folklore and performance in the context of Africa. Students will also be able to examine cultural artifacts and interview the artists who created them, and learn basic Akan, Ghana's most widely spoken language.

The trip is sponsored by the Office of Study Abroad and Outreach and the WIU departments of African American studies and foreign languages and literatures.
