WIU's Pamonag Receives Prestigious Summer Stipend from NEH

MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University Associate Professor of History Febe Pamonag recently received a Summer Stipends Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

"The NEH award supports two months of full-time work on my project titled 'Patients' Activism in the Culion Leper Colony, Philippines, 1905-1930s," said Pamonag. She plans to conduct archival research in the Philippines in June and July.

Through the very competitive program, Pamonag's project was chosen as one of 248 projects that received a total of $21.1 million in funding this year. For the Summer Stipends competition, more than 800 applications were received and only 10 percent were funded. Project proposals were evaluated by peer review panels and by the National Council on the Humanities.

"NEH grants bring the humanities to life for Americans by helping preserve valuable cultural resources, advancing research and supporting films and exhibitions that communicate the lessons of history and culture to new audiences," said NEH Chairman William D. Adams. "We are pleased to announce our support for these 248 exceptional research, educational, preservation and public programs in the humanities."

"I am truly honored to receive such a prestigious award. The recognition of the importance of the humanities and projects focusing on Asian history is very rewarding. I am eager to complete my research in the Philippines and make use of my research findings, not only to enrich my scholarship, but also my teaching here at WIU," said Pamonag.

Pamonag joined the WIU Department of History in 2007 as a specialist in Asian history. She teaches WIU classes including the history of China, Japan, women and gender in Asia, history and memory of the Asia-Pacific War, history of food in Asia, Asian history and world history. She was previously one of 16 post-secondary instructors in the U.S. selected to participate in the Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad to China in 2013 and has won numerous WIU research grants.
