WIU Students Commissioned Second Lieutenants

MACOMB, IL - - Seven Western Illinois University Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) cadets were commissioned second lieutenants in the U.S. Army during an Aug. 14 ceremony on campus.

WIU's military science department, established in 1968, is recognized as among the top 15 percent nationally. On the average, the program produces more than 20 new commissionees each year.

The following individuals, listed by hometown, took the oath of office of a commissioned officer:

CARY - - Brittany Strong-Steiner, a senior art major, received an active duty commission and will attend Chemical Police Officer Basic course. 2LT Strong is the daughter of Vaughn and Carolyn Strong. Her brother Vaughn Strong Jr. pinned on her bars. (Download print quality photo)

CHICAGO - - David L. Appel, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major from the 6300 block of N. Sheridan Rd., received a reserve duty commission and will attend Military Police Officer Basic course at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. 2LT Appel is the son of Redina Friedman and Harold Appel. Pinning on his bars were his father and his Uncle Mike Greenbaum. (Download print quality photo)

DALLAS CITY - - Adam J. Brumbaugh, a senior mathematics major, received a reserve duty commission and will attend Quartermaster Officer Basic course. 2LT Brumbaugh is the son of Dennis and Kathy Brumbaugh, who pinned on his bars. (Download print quality photo)

DECATUR - - Scott J. Gilman, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major, received an active duty commission and will attend Infantry Officer Basic course at Ft. Benning, GA. 2LT Gilman is the son of Brian and Jackie Gilman. His father pinned on his bars. (Download print quality photo)

EDELSTEIN - - Deron M. Sommers, a senior mechanical engineering major, received an immediate active duty commission to attend Armor Officer Basic course at Ft. Knox, KY. 2LT Sommers is the son of Gerald and Georgia Summers, who pinned on his bars. (Download print quality photo)

PRINCEVILLE - - Casey B. Steiner, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major, received an active duty commission and will attend Armor Officer Basic course at Ft. Knox, KY, in November. 2LT Steiner is the son of Susan McIntyre-Steiner of Princeville and Bruce Steiner of Springfield. Pinning on his bars were his brothers Chris and Ben McIntyre. SCHERERVILLE, IN - - Adam J. Dykstra, a senior political science major, received an active duty commission and will attend Infantry Officer Basic course at Ft. Benning, GA. 2LT Dykstra is the son of Donald and Donna Dykstra, who pinned on his bars. (Download print quality photo)
