MACOMB, IL -- "I spy, with my little eye, something that starts with C." (from "Children of the Corn," 1984).

Corn, corn, everywhere there's corn. Especially when you're in stuck in the middle of a corn maze.

The Western Illinois University Horn Field Campus corn maze will open its winding paths to the public beginning Saturday, Oct. 5. The maze, which has both a short and long option, will be open from 1 p.m. to dusk Saturdays and Sundays. A "Haunted Halloween Maze" will be held from 4:30-10:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31. Special "flashlight nights" will be held from 4:30-10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2 (bring your own flashlight). The maze will be fully staffed by volunteer organizations.

According to Karen Peitzmeier, manager of Horn Field Campus, the maze can take from 30-40 minutes to get through. Clues are posted throughout the maze so those who make no wrong turns may be able to get out in about 20 minutes, she added.

"It was fun creating the maze. It's even more fun trying to get through it," Peitzmeier said. "It's kind of spooky, especially as the sun starts setting. It can be a little unnerving -- in a fun way -- when you reach a dead end and have to retrace your steps."

Cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children ages 6-12 (children five and under will be admitted free). Children 12 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Groups are welcome (the group rate is $2.50 per person for groups of 15 or more). Participants should wear sturdy shoes (such as hiking boots) as the paths are fairly rough, Peitzmeier said.

Horn Field Campus is located south of Macomb on China Road. From South Johnson Street (past Macomb High School), turn right on China Road and follow the road one-quarter of a mile to the Horn Field Campus entrance. Parking will be permitted on the Horn Field Campus lot.
