MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of Geography will sponsor guest speaker Wendy Shaw, a professor and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 in Stipes Hall, 121.

Shaw will present "Geography Past, Present and Future: The Rise of Virtual Geography."

Geography in the 21st century is built upon a long and rich legacy of geographic thought, knowledge, and exploration. The presentation begins with a whirlwind tour of 2,400 years of geographic history before arriving at our destination in the present day within American geography. Events that saw the dawn of a new "virtual geography" are discussed, as well as the pro's and con's of geography as currently taught and practiced.

Finally, the important question will be asked, "where does geography and geographic education go from here?"
