WIU's Annual Science Demonstration Dec. 1 in Currens Hall

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University departments of physics, chemistry and biology will host the annual science demonstration show at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 in Currens Hall, 205.

The show, which is open free to the public, is put on by students from WIU's department of physics, chemistry and biology. This year's event is based on two popular science fiction movies, "Star Wars: The Force Awakes," and the animated movie, "Inside Out."

This year's event will begin with short movie clips that depict a scientific phenomenon or illustrate a basic science principle. After the showing of each clip, students will perform a demonstration of that phenomenon or principle.

This year's show includes acts that defy gravity, demonstrate the effects of huge electric fields on human body, show how to stop a fast moving spaceship and make impressions with lasers.

At 5:30 p.m., before the demonstration begins, audience members will have the chance to have close encounters with some exotic animals the WIU biology students are planning to bring.

The end of the show will feature fun with liquid nitrogen, which shows how extreme cold conditions can affect a variety of objects. Audience members will also get to taste some instant ice cream, made using liquid nitrogen.
