WIU Ag Students Host Pumpkin Patch Excursion

MACOMB, IL -- Pumpkin pie in a bag? Pumpkin seed tambourines? Kindergartners from St. Paul's in Macomb and the Southeastern school district were introduced to the wonderful world of pumpkins recently courtesy of Western Illinois University's agriculture education students.

According to Andrew Baker, WIU agriculture assistant professor, the students hosted the event a local pumpkin patch where the children learned how pumpkins grow and each child was able to pick his or her own pumpkin. The children also made various items using pumpkins. The activity was held in cooperation with Dawn Weinberg, agriculture literacy coordinator for McDonough and Hancock counties.

Baker said it usually surprises many people when he tells them that Illinois is the national leader in pumpkin production and it's an important industry for the region.

"It's good for the children to know how important pumpkins are. This was an exciting day for everyone involved. It's a real thrill to see the children's eyes just light up when they step off the bus," Baker said. "It was a great teaching opportunity for my students."
